Filament Knowledge

PLA Filament

PLA is economically produced from renewable resources and can be used in compostable products. PLA is the most widely used plastic filament material in FDM 3D printing, due to its low melting point, high strength, low thermal expansion, and good layer adhesion, although it has poor heat resistance. It is good for quick prototyping and creating nice, low-cost models such as concepts, prototypes, simple toys, jewelry, and statues. It is not suitable for technical or outdoor use.

ABS Filament

ABS provides favorable mechanical properties such as impact resistance, toughness, and rigidity when compared with other common polymers. ABS plastics are used largely for mechanical purposes and can also have electrical properties that remain fairly constant over a wide range of frequencies.

ASA Filament

ASA is similar to ABS, but it is more suitable for outdoor use because it has better UV and weather resistance. It is useful for functional prints, outdoor parts, and objects that need stronger durability than PLA.

TPU Filament

TPU is a flexible, durable, and elastic 3D printing filament commonly used for parts requiring rubber-like elasticity, high abrasion resistance, and toughness. It is ideal for flexible and impact-resistant parts such as seals, gaskets, protective parts, and prosthetic components. TPU is also used in cable jacketing, hose, tube, adhesive and textile coating applications, and high-performance films.

PETG Filament

PETG is a thermoplastic derived from PET, modified with glycol to enhance flexibility and reduce brittleness. This makes it more suitable for 3D printing, improving layer adhesion and reducing shrinkage during cooling. PETG bridges the gap between PLA’s user-friendliness and ABS’s higher heat resistance, making it ideal for practical parts, functional prototypes, mechanical parts, and robotics components.
